July 19: Paul Breau

The people have spoken. There has been clamouring for us to get a real, live guest on the show again. Sure, only one anonymous poster has said anything, but I think it's fair to say that represents 50,000 listeners. That's what I'm going with, anyway. So your wish is our command.

We'll have old pal Paul Breau drop by our studio for the hour tomorrow night (if you're reading this on Sunday, then tonight... if you're reading this on Monday, then nevermind). Paul is hosting at Yuk Yuk's this weekend and is never short of good conversation so we'll have lots to talk about. So tune in on Sunday night at 11. If you feel like it, give us a call. The in-studio number is 604-684-7561. The record is five calls in an hour. Maybe we can break it. It would look good on Paul's résumé.

I would have phoned but 2 calls is pretty sweet as it is. Wouldn't want to be greedy! Have to say Paul was right on the mark about Harry Potter though. I've read the first book and it made me want to barf it was so bad. People say at least it gets the kids reading. Sure. And joining the Nazi's teaches people how to march. Let me be specific. In one scene Harry saves some girl from being torn apart by an ogre. His reward is 25 points for the end of year class trophy or some such nonsese. A few pages later he is caught breaking curfew and has 100 points subtracted. This is idiotic in so many different ways. First of all, what kid gives a crap about these sorts of awards anyway? It's one of those things self-obsessed parents pressure their children into obtaining on the pretence the kids love it. Secondly the point system is so arbitrary you'd quickly give up on it no matter what your age. Honestly I could go on and on but I'll spare you. Don't even get me started on the movies... They manage to make an emo vampire seem cool in comparison. No easy task!
